December/Christmas recap

Jan
17

Here’s a very belated update!

While some of the others went to The Hanging of the Green back in December…
Maggie, Benjamin, and I stayed back at John-Clay and Sarah’s.
We watched Eric, did dishes, and watched a movie. : )
20161203_193154-220161203_193030-2

Some of us have been able to volunteer
at a local place that serves a meal on week nights to those in need. 20161207_184545-2

We had the Clay Christmas on the 17th.
Lot’s of food, family, little great-grands, presents, fun, and games!IMG_2219IMG_2223

Granny always gathers the little kids and tells an interactive Christmas story.
We’ve all had our turn as the kids gathered around Granny. : )
IMG_2228
IMG_2229

We sang some Christmas carols.
IMG_2240IMG_2237

The kids did a gift exchange. Then we do a great big White Elephant bash…
…which we didn’t get any pictures of. :/
IMG_2250

Each year Granny blesses each of us with a gift. : ) She gets a few in return.
IMG_2254

We played a fun group game. The gist is to unwrap as much saran wrapped candy as you can before the next person rolls doubles! It was a hit. There was candy everywhere. It was an intense several minutes. : )IMG_2268IMG_2266

And of course good ‘ole 42 is always played.
IMG_2271

Everyone was here for our family Christmas again this year! We so easily take it for granted! We celebrated the Friday and Saturday before Christmas.
The theme was “Chalkboard”.
IMG_2347

Lots of prep goes into getting our “tea” ready. Basically it’s an appetizer night. : )
With it being a chalkboard theme…Maggie and I got put to work writing lots of
chalk things (the Peace, Love, and Joy was pre-made).
IMG_2285IMG_2302IMG_2295IMG_2301IMG_2306

John-Clay bought himself an early Christmas present…A Lego Christmas train
that goes around on a track. Some people have a little obsession with Lego
around here…although I have to admit, it was pretty cool! The nephews were
pretty enthralled with it too.
IMG_2311

Maggie is the wonderful-official-shrimp-fryer.
IMG_2322

Look at what was at this little guy’s eye level when he walked in the door. : D
IMG_2324

Is that a little too much temptation for you Evan?
IMG_2323

Mom is so creative! She did great on the decorations.
IMG_2349

Nephews are the best.
IMG_2362IMG_2363
IMG_2359
And yes, there is an extra someone in the picture above…
…more on that some other time. : )

The food is always so fun and scrumptious. So much work goes into it.
It’s worth it though, ‘cause you get to eat on it all weekend. : )
IMG_2365IMG_2368

Each year we each draw a sibling’s (and in-laws) name. And give them a present at Christmas. Who you have is suppose to be kept a secret…but more often than not there’s some hashing out ideas, or something going on.
IMG_2378

It’s fun to see the gifts and thought behind them.
IMG_2376

Games, games, and more games.
IMG_2383IMG_2386IMG_2390

Dad got called in to work Saturday morning.
So we held off on the presents and such till he got back. We played games…IMG_2430

…and just hung out. : )
IMG_2396

Once Dad got back, we did our normal Christmas. Dad shared, we sang some
Christmas hymns…it’s so much fun to all sing together.
IMG_2401

Then presents…
IMG_2410

Since we were home…a car load of us were able to sing and pass out cards
at a couple of nursing homes on Christmas afternoon!
It was a treat to be able to share the joy of Christ’s birth with them…
especially fun ON Christmas. Their smiles made our day!IMG_2280

for he shall save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

November recap and a glimpse of Christmas

Dec
16

These are some of the last things from our fall garden before we finally had a freeze on November 18th.20161118_172935_thumb2

Maggie is thoroughly enjoying studying to be an EMT.
IMG_2103

Most of us have been assessed more than once in the past month. The assessments are getting more fun though…the first time she told us what we could do.(boring)
Now we get to make up our own ailments! : ) (Poor Maggie)20161111_195130

Evan tagged along to work on sighting in a rifle. He was super excited
to get to ride on the tractor!
20161101_174501

November is “picking up pecans” season for Grandpa!
20161207_114727

I got to have a camp-over with my girls one night. They were a great help checking
on the bees and winterizing them. Then we got to sleep out in the camper.
IMG_2040_thumb3

We had hot chocolate, colored adult coloring pages, laughed, talked, talked,
talked, and made memories. It was a whole lot of fun!
IMG_2030_thumb2

We are always grateful to hangout with these 3 little guys. We babysat Evan and Ransom for a week when all the couples went to a marriage conference.
20161112_091739_thumb20161030_171717_thumb2

Maggie was thrilled and honored to be a bridesmaid in a good friends wedding!
It is definitely a strange feeling to have your friends getting married…
…I mean, we aren’t that old, are we?
20161105_185633_thumb1

We celebrated Thanksgiving at Aunt Jan’s house this year!
IMG_2057

Several of the fabulous cooks!
IMG_2055

Working hard on a Thanksgiving themed crossword puzzle.
I think Charity got it done in the fastest time. (that’s no surprise)
IMG_2050

We are so blessed!
IMG_2065IMG_2051IMG_2069IMG_2074

Moo-ing to the cows. : )
IMG_2071

There was no delay in bringing out the Christmas decorations this year.
20161125_111613

The day after Thanksgiving we started setting up stuff. Lots of stuff. : )IMG_207820161125_113452

Charity and Abbie scored on their Christmas shopping excursion. Lot’s of goodies hidden in those bags. : )
IMG_2089

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and feel like Christmas…
it’s supposed to be 10°F with a 35mph N wind this weekend! That’s just plain cold.

//Camping 2016

Nov
11

Our annual family camping trip was going to be canceled again this year. : (
This time it was because Dad couldn’t get off work. We were going to settle for all being together at the house for the weekend like last year…but, Dustin and Hannah wanted to go camping…so, they made a plan, and those who could,
went camping earlier in the week. : )

The start of the camping crew.
IMG_1715

It was 80° on Wednesday. Perfect for getting a little wet in the lake.
IMG_1728

It’s so much fun to watch Evan take in and learn all the little things of life.
IMG_1730

Everyone came for the wiener roast on Wednesday night. : )
IMG_1735IMG_1744IMG_1836

Benjamin bought donuts for the next morning. By his drawings on the box
I think he was just a little excited. : D
IMG_1758IMG_18221

Thursday we started the day off with hiking.
IMG_176420161013_103944IMG_1782IMG_1792IMG_1805IMG_1796

There are all kinds of unique creatures, if we’ll just take the time
to stop and enjoy God’s amazing detailed creation.
IMG_1798IMG_1788IMG_1791

How many people does it take to figure out a plan?
IMG_1800

Dustin and Maggie took an unbeaten path adventure. : )
They had fun climbing up crumbling rocks and ended up with a good view of the lake.
2IMG_0558

Playing Dominion in the back of the truck.
IMG_1838

As you can tell, we went for EASY on the food for the trip.
We had just started eating, when it began to rain, again…
IMG_1857

…So, we ended up piling inside the biggest tent to finish eating, and then
we watched a movie. IMG_1869

Mmmmm! Nothing like food cooked over an open fire!
IMG_1873

My packing buddy. : )20161014_103423

On Friday we packed up, went home, unloaded, and then some of us started the weekend party with a good game of Power Grid.
20161014_172427

Caleb’s shirt he was wearing says, “I never dreamed I would be a super cool uncle,
but here I am killing it”. Yep, you sure are.
20161014_172507

A group game of Catch Phrase. Then a movie.
IMG_1881

The late night partiers. (if that is even a word.)
IMG_1889

Mom and Charity did most of the cooking for the weekend. It was a fabulous spread.
IMG_1890

Saturday we had a two team obstacle course/relay race…
…over the picnic table, under the bars, jump rope 5 times, get a bean bag in the bucket, balance backwards down the board, fill the lower bucket up from the top bucket, then ring the bell for the next person to go.
IMG_1894IMG_1918IMG_1920IMG_1909IMG_1891IMG_1914

Once your whole team made it through, your team had to make it to the finish line by working together to always be standing on a rug. This is the team that won!
IMG_1925

Next event was the Burnett Family Bean Bag Toss Tournament.IMG_1957IMG_1948IMG_1986

It was so much fun to just BE with the whole family for the weekend. : )
IMG_1985IMG_2010IMG_1993

Now that’s one cool dude!
IMG_1999

The winners of the tournament! IMG_2008

More games, food, movies, and fun!
IMG_2014IMG_2015

We are so blessed in our family to not only be brothers and sisters,
but to be brothers and sisters in Christ!

“Lonely”

Oct
31

I was looking for another challenge a few years back. I wanted to draw something with lots of wrinkles. I looked around for pictures and chose this one because
of how sad, lonely, and without hope she looked.

complete IMG_1563

So many people smile when in front of a camera, or in front of other people…sometimes I wonder how many people are just putting on a front.
I know some can truly have joy in their trial, because they have hope!
But, so many don’t have the hope of eternal life! Of salvation in Christ Jesus!
They have no purpose to live for greater than themselves and the pleasures of
the world. That’s where we each start.

When I look at this picture it reminds me how God created the world perfect,
and how the consequences of our sin affect each and every one of us, aging, hurt, loneliness, pain, heartache, sadness, hopelessness…I’m reminded how Jesus took the wrath of the Father for our sin on Himself, of the price that He paid to ransom us, his enemies. How He became sin for us, so that we might have restored fellowship with God. There is hope, rest, peace, purpose…in CHRIST JESUS. It reminds me, go tell others the good news of the gospel!

I drew it with charcoal and graphite.
Here are some pictures I took of the progression.

Ephesians 2:12-14
“That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;”

Matthew 11:28
“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Guns, Airshow, and Possum grapes

Oct
17

A couple weeks ago, our cousins from out of state were in the area. So, we all went shooting. They provided the ammo and clays, and we brought the guns.
As usual, it was so much fun! : ) 20160930_154432IMG_7898

Gun season for deer is just around the corner,
so we also took the opportunity to sight in some rifles.
IMG_1618IMG_1637IMG_1642

Heidi joined us for the fun too. : )
20160930_150315IMG_164020160930_17313720160930_173317

Grandpa still knows how to knock ‘em down.
IMG_1661IMG_1655IMG_1651

While we were out shooting, some old airplanes flew over in formation. They were flying in for an airshow some of our family went to the next day.14517383_10154249263268110_8406116354922543762_n
20161001_12221520161001_115541

With fall comes the annual possum grape picking expedition. Well, almost annual,
two years ago they were SO plentiful that we skipped picking them last year.
If you have never heard of possum grapes…here are a few posts we’ve done
in the past about them.  1, 2, and 3.

Why is that bush moving? Oh, that’s where Dad went… : )
20161002_17024820161002_170412

The picking crew was a bit smaller this year than normal, but that’s the way it goes when people have to study for school and are very allergic to poison ivy. : /

Do we need the trailer or not?                      The answer would be yes. : )
20161002_17441120161003_184946

We picked at the place where Grandpa used to live, and a little on the
county roads one evening. Then the next evening we went back out
to pick at the best possum grape vines around.
20161002_17052720161003_18373120161003_191450

There’s nothing quite like being with your family out on a county road at dusk,
a cool fall wind blowing, standing up on an old rickety wooden ladder “balanced”
on the trailer, trying to miss the poison ivy while picking possum grapes.
It’s a special experience.
20161003_184952

Then came the time consuming, purple finger staining, picking process. ; )
We got a total of three batches of jelly this year!

Hebrews 13:15
“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually,
that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

Remember in what ever circumstance, (even itchy poison ivy) praise God continually!
